New Artist: Hannah Drennan
26 March 2024
We are excited to welcome Canadian illustrator Hannah Drennan to the Hive! Hannah's love for character development really shines through in her work which would be ideal for a variety of illustration markets from middle grade to young adult projects.
Let's find out a little more about what inspires Hannah her interests and future hopes.
Where are you from?
I'm from Ottawa, the capital of Canada. I grew up in a small village on the outskirts of the city. Now I live an hour south in Cornwall.
What inspired you to be an illustrator?
Being an illustrator felt like a very natural decision for me. I loved spending hours drawing as a kid, and never got tired of it. I'm thankful that my parents always supported my decision to be an artist.
How long have you been working as an illustrator?
I started doing some freelance illustration work after college in 2019 and later worked as a background painter in the animation industry. Since then I've worked on projects in the publishing world and have really enjoyed it.
How would you describe your illustration style?
I would describe my as influenced by comics and artists that I follow online. I love using a textured ink brush for a more natural feel. I also love using vivid colours, and adding small details like grain or chromatic aberration.
Who/What have been your key influences as an illustrator?
Some artists that have influenced me are Gabriel Picolo and Laia Lopez. I'm also inspired by movies, fashion, and from moments of my own life.
What type of projects, clients or illustration markets would you like to work in?
I love to work on middle grade and young adult projects. I'm interested in graphic novels, books, and magazines. But I'd love to try things I haven't considered before as well!
What do you like doing when you are not illustrating?
When I'm not drawing you can find me spending time with friends, playing video games, going to a Pilates class or a walk by the river, or cuddling my dog (Bailey) and my cat (Bertie, who also likes to keep me company while I draw.)
